How To Set Up A Shower Waterproofing Membrane
If you would install a membrane on your shower, you can avoid water from getting into the grouting of your tiles. You can also avoid other problems that involve the penetration of water into your shower accessories and materials. The membrane will act as the protectant shower materials and will avoid mold from forming on them.
- Prepare the materials you need—membrane, waterproof sealer, scissors, hot air gun, hand roller and preformed corners.
- Examine the shower, and check it for any sharp materials and nails. If you cannot get rid of the materials, you can use a sander to flush them away. Clean the area, where you will apply the membrane.
- Level your walls and floor. Avoid water from settling by sloping the base down to you drain’s pipe when you are applying the substrate material.
- Apply the waterproofing membrane to your shower. Roll it out once you have carefully assessed and calculated the upturns you need. Cut it according to your calculations.
- Use preformed corners for the shower base’s corners. Put the membrane firmly in all the corners of your showers, and then be able to cut a part for your drain. Put some adhesive to the waterproofing membrane. Fix it but make sure that you will make it bond tightly especially for the drain and the corners.
- Apply the membrane to the walls. Use the same process as above; however, you may need to seam membrane sheets if you need a wider waterproofing than the actual size of the membrane. Use a hot air gun to flatten the membrane out, and then make use of some nails for the upper edges.
- Apply the shower pan after testing. Clean where you applied the membrane, and then test it for any leaks. Test by running and filling the floor with water, and then mark its upper edge using the marker. Go back the next day to see any lower water level. When that happens, apply another membrane over seams after getting rid of the water.
- Apply the adhesive once done with the above steps. The next day, apply the drain by using a sealer on its edges.
