The Christmas festivities are associated with a number of things that make them special. Some of the things that form part and parcel of the event are Christmas trees. The Christmas tree decorations you see in Singapore are breathtakingly special, something that you should certainly enjoy. They are particularly tall, which makes them stand out pleasantly.
Although Christmas was originally celebrated as the birth of Jesus, there is really no link between the Christmas trees and this special occasion. It is said, however, that some of the plants can be traced back to traditional Christian rituals.
There is another thing that makes some plants be preferred as Christmas trees though. The Christmas period comes at a very cold season, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. During the winter season, many plants are devoid of leaves. Hence the few plants that still had leaves during the time became natural choices when it came to selecting Christmas tree.
The following are some of the plants that are commonly used as Christmas trees.
Ivy
This climbing plant can be found either on walls or on the stems of other trees. Ivy is one of the plants that stay green throughout the cold season.
Other plants in the same family as the Ivy are found in Singapore. However, many of them are in the form of shrubs. You may also get true cultivars of Ivy.
Mistletoe
This is another evergreen plant, which is a parasite, as it grows on other trees from which it taps its food. There are a number of mistletoe species that are naturally found in Singapore.
Holly
This plant has shiny, dark green leaves that are prickly. Its twigs, complete with berries, have been associated with Christmas since time immemorial.
There are local holly species found in Singapore.
Other popular plants for Christmas trees include Silver Fir and Norway spruce. The plants are usually grown closely together so that they can become straight and tall, with pointed leaves.
